Mercedes Schlapp is not the White House's strategic communications advisor. She must contend with the president, who acts as his own communications director as well as numerous legal fights that can throw off the administration's messaging strategy and Cabinet secretaries caught up in their own controversies. But through it all Schlapp remains focused on the mission in hand and has worked closely with White House's political affairs as well as legislative affairs and policy shops as well in the larger communication operation for policy-related rollouts. As of now, she has concentrated on a variety of issues including school safety as well as opioid abuse. As of now, Schlapp does not deal too much with journalists. The media spotlight was on her in the wake of being announced as the candidate to succeed Hope Hicks, the communications director. Mercedes Schlapp's position to serve as White House Strategic Communications Advisor isn't easy. The job can be difficult by the fact that she works with the president who acts as the director of his communications. There are also numerous legal proceedings that could disrupt the administration's strategy for communication, and several Cabinet secretaries entangled with personal scandals. Schlapp is, however, maintained her focus on her job. She collaborates closely in conjunction with White House political affairs and legislative teams and policy shops as well as the larger communications department to oversee the rollout of policies. Her main area of concern has been around issues such as trade, school safety and opioids. The current position she holds doesn't require any contact with journalists. However, in March she was mentioned to be the candidate who would take over Hope Hicks at the Communications Director post. The fight turned ugly. Friends of Schlapp and Tony Sayegh another candidate for the position have been fighting over the media. Schlapp claimed that after she was informed that when the Washington Examiner ran a story with negative remarks about Sayegh she had a conversation with the latter.
